A Costa Rican court has sentenced former President Rafael Calderon to five years in jail for corruption.
Calderon was found guilty of receiving an unlawful payment of at least 520,000 US dollars during an official deal to buy medical equipment from Finland in 2004.
He claims the money was payment for consulting work and he will appeal against the ruling. Calderon was President of Costa Rica from 1990 to 1994.
There was speculation he planned to run for president again in the February 2010 elections.
