Maternal and child health projects around the world will receive a fresh push from a new 1.5 billion US dollars project over the next five years.
The United Nations and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the joint pledge on Monday at the Women Deliver summit in Washington, billed as the largest-ever conference on women's health.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the project aims to raise up to 15 billion US dollars to help women deliver babies safely and boost family planning.
An additional 45 billion US dollars may be needed by 2015, according to Ban. He added that current vaccination and nutrition programmes will be incorporated to the project, which will focus on broader health initiatives.
