Only the other day, I held a discourse with someone about the recent musical output of Alicia Keys - saying how I felt it wasn't on the same level as the songs she was producing between 2001-2004 (apart from her recent collaboration with Jay-Z). And then I heard the undeniably epic "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart". Now I feel a complete fool...
There is a song of hers (that shall remain nameless) which remains incredibly personal to me, mainly because I shared it with someone who I had a close relationship with, and I feel that "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart" takes you on an equally emotional journey. In fact, I'd go as far to say that it is her best song to date, even surpassing the magical "Falling".
The second single from Keys' fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom, undoubtedly comes from an incredibly personal place. As you listen, you can genuinely hear and feel Keys' pain and anguish, especially in the lyric "you know I'll always love with you - right to the end" (wipes tear from cheek). On paper, it might look a bit cheesy, but it's the way she sings it that makes it sound so unique. This girl just does things with her voice that few other artists can. I've just played the song for the fifth time in a row. This could go on all night...
