Ever since I first came across "Empire State of Mind", I keep asking myself the same question: can a song get any better than this?
I've been obsessed with New York ever since I came up with Se7en while over there during Christmas 2004. NYC is the kind of metropolis that makes you feel like anything is possible, and while I was there I felt like I could create a project that could one day influence positive change. While there is still a long way to go - after running the project for nearly five years, things are starting to turn in our favour. I feel I have New York to thank for that, which is why I love Jay-Z's ode to the greatest city on earth.
Though it doesn't attempt to hide the darker side of the city, it also celebrates the positivity you encounter when you're on the streets of the ultimate capital. It reminds me of the great times I've had out there.
While listening to "Empire State of Mind", I close my eyes and I feel like I'm back in NYC. It's the kind of track I'd love to hear playing in the background while I'm sat in a coffee house, pouring syrup onto my pancakes, stirring the sugar into my black coffee, and contemplating my next move in life, as idealistic as that vision may sound. Basically, it takes me back to a happy place, and, for me, when a song does that - it's something incredibly special.
Has a better a better musicl homage to a capital city ever been written? I very much doubt it:
