Unlike other publications, I'm not going to bore you with a gushing and generic review of Scorsese's latest movie Shutter Island ('he's amazing', 'a true master of film', 'the best director on the planet' - no thanks!) , mainly because there's a gorgeous gallery of the film waiting for you at the bottom of this article. But I will share a few thoughts on what I believe is one of his most brilliant and harrowing films to date. A masterpiece, if you like. (actually, that does sound a bit gushing and generic - Ed).
Shutter Island warrants the masterpiece tag thanks to its ability to play with the viewer's mind in a way that leaves you in a state of shock after the film's conclusion. It comes with a twist far greater than the one present in the
Sixth Sense, and that really takes some doing. Of course, if you've already read the Dennis Lehane-penned book of the same name, you'll be aware of this. But if not, get yourself ready for a complete and utter 'mind fuck' (a technical term used by my former Film school lecturers). It reall does leave you rethinking everything you've just seen and wanting to watch the film a further five or six times so that you can fully understand what happened. And even then, you may not find what you're looking for...
From a personal perspective,
Shutter Island is so bloody good that after watching it I wanted to go up and hug the nearest strange - because after seeing so many generic films of late, it has restored my belief that filmmaking is the most powerful visual medium we have. But then, Martin Scorsese was at the helm...
