While Nexus One seems to have stolen all of the attention at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, US-based electronics company ZOMM has unveiled a device that we think could turn out to be another significant development for the mobile industry. Yep, that's right - it's a wireless leash for mobile phones.
Though the concept of owning a mobile phone leash might put a smile on some of your faces, when you think about it - it's actually a brilliant idea. I mean, how many people's lives have been ruined by the loss of their mobile phone? Similar to e-mail, a mobile records our interaction with others and provides a connection to our friends. Without one, we are totally lost. Just ask all of the people who have lost theirs during a drunken night out, or those who have had the misfortune of having theirs stolen. The loss of a phone can result in many sleepless nights, something the ZOMM could bring to an end once and for all.
ZOMM claims its wireless leash will work with any "Bluetooth-enabled" phone, and will sound an alarm if you walk away from your phone or, we presume, if someone else tries to walk off with it.
"ZOMM is a device that not only keeps your mobile phone secure, but also helps keep you and your family safe," said Laurie Penix, ZOMM’s co-founder. "With two kids in college and a senior in high school, I feel better knowing they have a panic alarm that sounds an ear piercing alert to fend off a would-be attacker, AND calls emergency assistance if they choose."
I'll certainly be getting one of these when they come out later this year. In the mean time, I'm going to start working on developing some wheels for my phone, so I can take it out for walks in the park (just messing).
